Geothermal energy

Geothermal energy is a sustainable alternative for heating greenhouses. Thanks to the businesses in the greenhouse horticulture sector, we already have about twenty sources of geothermal heat in the Netherlands. More wells will be drilled in the future. Many Harvest House growers are also connected to a source. Together, they account for almost half of our acreage.

Growers pump hot water from about a kilometre under the surface to heat the greenhouse and the cooled water is pumped back again. The growers are able to cover 22% of the warmth they need using geothermal energy – so natural gas is no longer required.
