State secretary impressed by greenhouse farming

25 January 2024

State Secretary Jean Rummenie visited Kwekerij Overgaag, a pepper grower of cooperative Harvest House, in Honselersdijk on Monday 8 July. In his first week of work, the new LVVN state secretary was immediately introduced to the innovations and strength of greenhouse farming.

Growers John Overgaag and Wouter Overgaag, Bart van den Bosch together with Jelte van Kammen (CEO Harvest House) gave a tour of the greenhouse and pepper sorting shed. They showed how they strive for more efficient and sustainable cultivation every day. Jaap Bond of Top Sector Horticulture & Starting Materials was also present to tell the important story of our sector. Important topics discussed during the visit included energy transition, the Horti Footprint, crop protection and CTGB's sustainability desk, digitalisation and the international competitiveness of greenhouse horticulture.

Jean Rummenie was impressed by the pepper farm. "This is high-tech production in optima forma. Fantastic to see what a versatile company this is and what possibilities they have in terms of energy. We can be very proud of the Dutch horticultural sector. We have high-tech, sustainable horticulture companies here that are among the world's best."

Jelte van Kammen looks back on the visit with satisfaction. "It was an honour to receive the state secretary. Rummenie was already familiar with greenhouse horticulture and we updated him on current issues. All the topics we wanted to discuss came up."
